In the social networking course, we have
discussed about four basic principles of memory. In my student’s life, we’re
always using our brain to try to memorize things and principles as many as
possible. So I want to start with my memory experience in this blog.
Pro. Chan had provided us with four basic
principles about memory below.
1、
Assumption of a limited
capacity of the mental system.
Although we want to
memorize everything, we know it is impossible. At the beginning of studying
English, I felt it was difficult to memorize all English words. As spoken in
this course, our memory capacity is limited. When the number of information
attains some point, the brain is restricted to memorize other things. So if my
restriction point is 100 words per day, I won’t be able to memorize more than
100 words. But according to my experience, this restriction will be improved if
you are enthusiastic to exercise your memory capacity. And this capacity is
actually related to individual’s talent. But I still believe that this capacity
is limited in some range because everyone forget some things and vast of human’s
memory will conform some regulation like Ebbinghaus Curve below.
2、There is a control mechanism to
government the encoding, transformation, processing, storage, retrieval and
utilization of information.
This principle actually describes that it’s
more difficult to complete a new task than a routine task. And more processing
power is required in a new environment. It’s easy to understand this principle.
When we do one thing again and again, we will try to memorize it again and
again. So it has more chances to be processed in our brain and more probability
to be memorized. In the process of repeating, we can find easier way to
complete task and know all the steps by the right order to deal with this type
task. So experience is important to encounter with the task and at this, experience is equal to former memory.
3、
There is a two-way flow of
information as we try to make sense of the world around us.
The cognition from the senses and
information we have stored in memory helps us memorize some things. It’s easy
to understand. The things relative to our life is easy to find the regulation
to have a long-term memory.
4、Human organism has been
genetically prepared to process and organize information in specific ways.
In the course, Pro. Chan made an example
about infants. A non-experienced infant always behave differently from adults.
When a strange human comes out before infants, they will have attention to his
face at first. In contrast, an adult will pay attention to other parts of the
human according to his own interest, probably such as hair, cloth, dress or
shoes.
Human memory research
is important to social networking. In order to create a popular website, the
question what can attract the users and stimulates users to memorize the
website is required to solve.

Human Memory is a very good topic and it is still a mystery study nowadays. Yet we do know some of character of memory, just as what you listed. In this article, you gave some very good examples to explain the principles of memory such as the experience of memorizing English words, which makes me more clear about that our mental system has a limited capacity.
回复删除I do agree with the last paragraph. Only to find a way that can attract users to memorize the website can win in the social network competition.
Thank you for your reply.
删除Very impressive to involve the positive impacts the Ebbinghaus Curve acts on human intelligence. Enthusiasm is definitely the primary stimulus to improve the memory capacity of us.
回复删除Thank you for your reply.
删除Pro.Chan's example about difference between non-experience infants and adults is really helpful for us to understand the fourth basic principle about memory:Human organism has been genetically prepared to process and organize information in specific ways.In your last paragraph,I think that the most important factor to create a popular website and attract users is innovative ideas.
回复删除Thank you for your reply. I'm very happy that you agree with my point that the most important factor to create a popular website and attract users.
删除And I think this is what I want to emphasize in this blog. If we want to establish a social website, we must consider how to attract more users at the beginning of all. So we must know what can make users memorize our website after glimpse. We don't only add some interesting part into our website, but we also make a good design to make sure other's impression.
Based on the knowledge of psychology and cognition we learnt, You introduce us a notable example of human memory operating mechanism, which is very impressive. you assume that there are 4 basic principles about memory: a limited capacity of the mental system, a control mechanism to government the encoding, transformation, processing, storage, retrieval and utilization of information, a two-way flow of information as we try to make sense of the world around us, human organism which prepared to process and organize information in specific ways, and I think the second one is extremely important to memory operating mechanism. With out it we could only remember the chaotic and useless information, which cannot be transformed into knowledge.
回复删除I also agree with your opinion that Human memory is very similar to social network, which may be helpful to SNA.
Thank you for your reply.
删除To SNA, the psychology and cognition are important.
Actually, any service is based on people's mind. So I think the psychology and cognition are important for all kinds of products.
So at the beginning of researching products, we must consider what people want, how to attract users and how to change people's lifestyle.
Memory is very interesting. There is a great movie talk about memory and psychology, whose name is "Memento".
回复删除Your blog gives a clear explanation about the basic concepts of human memory. As you say, human memory research is important to social networking. In order to create a popular website, the question what can attract the users and stimulates users to memorize the website is required to solve. So I think if you can further discuss the solutions, which can make your article a more meaningful reference!
回复删除To a certain degree, I agree with you. Human memory is a vital part for us to study social networking. Especially for social networking companies, it is useful for them to analyse how to attract mo users.
回复删除Hello, Bella, thank you for giving such detailed principles of memory. For your first point that assumption of a limited capacity of the mental system, I agree with you that exercising your memory capacity can improve the words restriction. However, though the Ebbinghaus Curve shows the decrease of retention with the passing time, I’m sure that if you practice repeatedly, this curve will recover.
回复删除Human memory is a very fun topics. I enjoyed reading your article about it. And your point about the utilization of Human memory for social companies is quite interesting. I totally agree with you.
回复删除"Human organism has been genetically prepared to process and organize information in specific ways " <- cannot agree more!!
